MD34 – Bremen stand up when counted as Düsseldorf fall apart

And with that, the Bundesliga is finished for another season! Bayern’s status as champions had long been confirmed, but the situation at the bottom remained far from clear before this final matchday. With Düsseldorf in 16th place and two points ahead, Bremen needed Union to do them a favour if they wanted to stay in the top flight.

Fortunately, despite the Berlin side previously confirming their surivival, Union wanted to end the season on a high. Their 3-0 victory at home against Fortuna gave Bremen the chance to reach the relegation play-off. In the end, a draw in that match would have been enough for Bremen, as they hammered Köln 6-1. They will now play Heidenheim as they try to stay in the Bundesliga.

Elsewhere, Borussia Monchengladbach sealed fourth place and the last Champions League spot with their win versus Hertha. After Bruno Labbadia’s side beat Leverkusen last week, a draw would have been enough. In the end, though, Marco Rose’s men did the job with all three points.

As always, a very special thanks to our friends ‘Phre The Eon’ for the theme music. Anyone interested can find them on Facebook.
